A 5-Step Regimen for Rosacea-Prone Skin

A 5-Step Regimen for Rosacea-Prone Skin

Unsure if you have rosacea? Here's what you need to know.

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes red, inflamed and irritated skin patches or visible blood vessels on your face. It can appear as a permanent flush, and may also cause small pimples. This condition mostly affects people over the age of 30 and can worsen over time as more capillaries enlarge.

If you suspect you have rosacea, it's best to seek a doctor's opinion to receive an accurate diagnosis and medical treatment advice.

But don't worry, it's not contagious and can be treated! Aside from medical treatments, a good skincare routine you can help alleviate symptoms and enhance your skins appearance.

Here is a five-step skincare routine designed to address the symptoms of rosacea

Step 1: Keep it Clean!  Avoid using any unclean towels, sponges or wipes that may transfer bacteria to your skin. Ideally use products with antibacterial properties and clean your hands thoroughly before touching your face. For best results sanitise your hands before starting your skincare routine.

Step 2: Gentle Cleanse. Cleanse your face with a gentle, cream cleanser. Look for a cleanser that is fragrance free, and that steer clear of anything containing alcohol.  Wet your face and apply a small amount of cleanser to your face, massaging gently in circular motions. Rinse your face thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Step 3: Repair with LED.  Use a LED light therapy mask for 10 minutes, with the red & blue light setting to help reduce redness and inflammation. The blue light also works by killing the bacteria that can cause flare-ups. The red light will help to repair your skin's barrier making it more resilient to the environment.

Step 4: Hydrate.  Apply a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser to your face, avoiding any products that contain fragrances or alcohol, which can irritate the skin

Step 5: SPF.  Sun protection is vital for all skin types, but it's particularly crucial for anyone with rosacea, which can be triggered by sun exposure. Try to keep out of direct sun and also use mineral-based sunscreens that contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as they are gentle on sensitive skin and provide broad-spectrum coverage.

A tailored skincare routine for rosacea can minimise symptoms and enhance skin appearance. Adhering to this guide can help control rosacea and preserve skin's natural barrier, resulting in a healthier and brighter complexion.

It's important to note that each person's skin is unique, requiring personalised adjustments to the routine. If you have a pre-existing skin concern, it's advisable to consult a dermatologist or skin expert before beginning a new skincare routine.
